Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS)
Rules & Regulations
January 1, 2007 was the year the "Joshua Law" went into effect. This law requires all sixteen (16) year old teens applying for a class "D" driver's license to complete a State of Georgia approved driver's education course and complete a total of 40 hours of supervised driving, 6 hours of which must be a night, with a parent or guardian's sworn verification that these requirements have been met.
The approved driver's education course can be completed one of two ways:
- First, a teen can complete thirty (30) hours of classroom instruction and receive a limited certificate of completion from the State of Georgia. The teen must then complete forty (40) hours of "Parent Taught Behind the Wheel Training."
(Warning: The forty (40) hours of "Parent Taught Behind the Wheel Training" must be completed in its entirety if a student completes a classroom or online course. A parent must be aware that this booklet is a state document and fraud is a criminal offense in Georgia. Misleading the DDS about the teen's training could subject the parent to criminal and civil liability)
- Second, a teen can complete thirty (30) hours of classroom instruction and six (6) hours of behind-the-wheel training from an approved State of Georgia driver training instructor. With this 30/6 course, the forty (40) hours of "Parent Taught Behind the Wheel" training is not required, saving the parents hundreds of dollars in fuel costs. The only requirement with the 30/6 course is the parent or guardian must supervise the teen driving for a total of forty (40) hours, of which six (6) hours must be completed at night. No driving log is required with the completion of the 30/6 full driver's education course.
